Students from 10 campuses across California coordinated around solidarity actions for May Day, or International Workers’ Day. Although the campaigns being highlighted at each campus differed, the tying theme was that of dignity and justice for all regardless of race, sex, class, or immigration status. The students’ common demands can be seen on the statewide Facebook event page — MAY DAY! California Campus Actions! — and below:
- We Say NO to Racism and Privatization, YES to Democracy in Education! Cancel new fees and roll back the existing ones at all campuses. Education is a right, not a commodity!
- Drop all charges against the UCSC 22 and all students & campus workers. We demand the right to free speech and the right to protest!
- Make Ethnic Studies a General Education requirement at all CSU campuses. We demand that the academy serve the community!
- Remove UC President Napolitano and CCSF Special Trustee Agrella. We demand democratic governance by students, staff, and faculty!
